In my role as Lincoln, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting many fascinating places.
My travels span two planets, three moons, the White House, Kilimanjaro’s summit, and the Carnival-Time Mini Golf Course in South Bassenon, Kentucky.
But I had never been to Venus.
With much anticipation I boarded the MITUS-11 rocket that would carry us through space.
I could not help but reflect on my two unlikely teammates:
A) Arc’x’vestula, an alien from a galaxy unknown to me;
B) The Radiatron, who was also an improbable participant.
The Radiatron would rendezvous once we orbited Venus, leaving me alone with my companion.
Arc’x’vestula cut a striking figure, her pink skin and bald head making her hazel eyes riveting.
We had given her a spacesuit meant for a larger build, big enough for her extra arms.
I imagined this felt quite unnatural.
But if she thought so, she vocalized no complaint.
She barely spoke at all, although at times I found her staring at me. I smiled at every instance, but she never responded to the gesture.
Uubiquatus had described her world as being populated with hive-like colonies.
Arc’x’vestula was a top producer in her society, a leading manager known for exceeding quotas.

Among her people she was an oddity.
Most of her kind did not experience much emotion, yet she possessed a wide range of feelings and empathy.
Arc’x’vestula kept her feelings hidden from all.
For she would be shunned if her true nature was known.
The MITUS-11 sped across the depths of space, until we advanced upon our target.
A vision of hazy, shrouded Venus came into view.

Perhaps I should have been awed by the sight.
Perhaps the images of that unique body should have stirred something in my soul.
Yet the only thing on my mind, the only idea that occupied my thoughts … was sleep.
A feeling of drowsiness crept forth.
And it wasn't like being a child, when I used to count sheep in my head.
No, this was different.
Sleep came from without, not within.
Wrapped in memory and fantasy.
Settling on me and my companion simultaneously.
I staggered to the controls and punched in a distress signal as my eyes fluttered a final time.
I could hear Dr. Kinkaide on the comms asking what was wrong?
But I could say nothing.
I closed my eyes and drifted off into an all-consuming slumber.
