Part 3:
The witch thrust her awful face into mine.
“Your life will soon end. But you’ve one last thing to witness. I call it the living dissection."
She advanced on Dale with fingers twisting and wriggling.
“Piece by piece. Limb by limb. And you shall watch. That’s how I punish those who transgress my domain.”
A fiery axe came to life in her hand.
Immense.
Murderous.
Flaring and crackling.
The witch looked at the weapon and laughed.
Struggling one last time to shake free, I summoned every ounce of strength.
I unleashed everything I could ever dream, think, hope. All toward one goal: standing up.
And then … I felt something.
Did I feel something?
Please please please move.
I began thrashing!
Inside I thrashed and whirled and exploded.
On the outside … I did not even twitch.
Nothing.
I remained immobile.
Her spell was too powerful.

Her spell was too powerful.
Limp and defeated, my inert body did not move.
I could not save him.
Dale would die.
The witch hoisted the axe overhead.
Her nostrils flared wide.
Eyes sparkled.
Twitching cheekbones danced with delight.
Giddy laughter became screeching.
The joyous, hideous intentions overtook her.
So much so, apparently, that she never saw the object coming for her head.

Something flew across the room.
Bashing her skull!
Instantly dropping her in collapse
The mystery item exploded in broken pieces, bouncing to the floor with a shower of … dirt?
I turned to get a better look – and found I that could actually move.
The hold was gone!
It quickly became clear who had rescued us.
Stalks poked out from the shards of a broken vase, with leaves and roots tangled everywhere.
The orange plants!
Our little trio of sentient stalks.
Somehow they'd just saved our lives
“Are you OK?” Rick asked, dashing to our fallen friends.
“Do not tarry in this moment/Find safety Hatcher-Hyungs/Find safety!”
Rick stood confused, but only for a second.
He grabbed a mop bucket and packed the orange plants with as much dirt as he could.

“Can you hear me?” I asked Dale, who still seemed groggy. “Are you hurt?”
“Not really. Maybe. What’s happening?” he groaned.
“We’re getting out of here,” my brother said. “Can you blink?”
“A little.”
Rick grabbed his keys and said, “The car.”
We reappeared in the chilly air of the driveway.
Seconds later we screeched into the night, tail lights ablaze in the falling snow.
